Carbon steel pipe

The most important component in carbon steel pipe is iron, which accounts for more than 98%; the second is carbon, which accounts for 0.0218%-2.11%; the last one is impurities of silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, and manganese.

Their content determines the performance and quality of carbon steel pipe. Generally, the higher the carbon content, the greater the hardness and strength of the steel, and the smaller the plastic toughness; the less the carbon, the lower the strength and hardness of the steel, and the greater the plastic toughness.

Sulfur makes carbon steel have hot brittleness, causing the steel to crack along the grain boundaries. This is because sulfur does not dissolve in iron in the solid-state, it dissolves in iron after being melted at high temperature, and exists in crystal form after cooling down. Phosphorus makes carbon steel have cold brittleness. This is because phosphorus can be completely dissolved into ferrite in the solid-state at room temperature, causing the steel’s plastic toughness to drop sharply.

Types of carbon steel pipe

Carbon steel can be divided into two types due to their structure: general carbon steel and high-quality carbon steel. The first one contains more impurities and is inexpensive.

It is used where performance requirements are not high. The carbon content is mostly below 0.30%, and the manganese content does not exceed 0.80%. It has low strength but has toughness, deformation, and plasticity properties. Except in a few cases, it is generally used directly without heat treatment.

Black steel pipes are uncoated steel pipes. The dark surface is due to the iron oxide formed on the surface during the production process.
The main purpose of black steel pipes is to transport propane or natural gas to residential and commercial buildings. The black pipe is a seamless steel pipe, which makes the gas more convenient to transport and not easy to leak. Black steel pipe is also used in fire sprinkler systems because it is more resistant to fire than a carbon steel pipe.
